This Governing Framework had established a deliberate Weakness in the Central Government, fearing the Tyranny the Colonists had just escaped — but it is this Weakness that now was about to tear the loosely knitted Nation apart. The Congress had no Power to Tax, no Authority to Regulate Interstate Commerce, and no Ability to Raise a Standing Army. Each State functioned almost as an independent Country, printing its own Money and imposing Tariffs on its Neighbors, which made Trade all but impossible.

The Film “A More Perfect Union” masterfully depicts this Crisis Period. The Convention’s Delegates understood that the Articles were leading America toward Ruin. Shays’ Rebellion in Massachusetts had exposed the Government’s Impotence when it could not muster Forces to quell the Uprising. The States were on the brink of Economic Collapse, with Foreign Powers refusing to extend Credit and internal Trade grinding to a Halt, And across the Atlantic, the British Lion was licking his Lips in anticipation of possibly retaking the Colonies. Something had to be done, and done quickly, if the Experiment in Liberty was to survive.

The Gathering of Giants in Philadelphia

The Movie brilliantly captures the Drama of the Constitutional Convention, which began in May 1787. Fifty-five Delegates from twelve States (Rhode Island refused to participate) gathered in the Pennsylvania State House. These were not ordinary Men but Intellectual Giants shaped by Christian Principles and Enlightenment Philosophy. The Film portrays the Solemn Atmosphere, presided over by the Hero of the Revolutionary War — General George Washington — as these Patriots set about the Monumental Task of creating a completely New Form Government, never seen in the World before.

The Virginia Plan, which he introduced, called for a strong National Government with Three Branches. This Proposal immediately sparked intense Debate between Federalists, who advocated for Centralized Power, and Anti-Federalists, who feared the Return of Monarchical Tyranny. The Movie captures the Personal Animosities and Ideological Divisions that threatened to tear the Convention apart.

Compromise and Conflict in the Birth of a Nation
