In an Era where Artificial Intelligence (AI) powers everything from Social Media Moderation to Chatbots and Content Recommendation Systems, concerns about inherent Biases have escalated.
Critics argue that AIs, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, exhibit Extreme Political Biases that lead to uneven treatment of Topics — often flagging or suppressing Discussions deemed “Inappropriate” based on Subjective Standards.
This Practice, they claim, directly challenges foundational Legal Principles of Free Speech, such as those enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution or Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
By prioritizing certain Viewpoints, AI Systems risk amplifying Censorship, stifling open Discourse, and eroding Democratic Values.
This Article draws on recent Studies and Reports to explore these Issues, highlighting how Bias manifests and why it poses a serious Threat to Free Expression, Free Societies and Freedom at the most basic level.
The Reality of Political Bias in AI Systems
AI’s Political Bias is not a fringe Theory; —it’s a well-documented Phenomenon backed by empirical Research. Bias can stem from Training Data, which often reflects the Societal or Cultural Leanings of its Creators, or from Algorithmic Design Choices that embed Normative Judgments.
A 2023 Study published in Patterns by Researchers from Stanford University analyzed popular LLMs and found clear Partisan Leanings. For instance, Models like ChatGPT and Gemini showed a tendency to favor left-leaning Responses on Issues like Climate Change and Social Justice, while underrepresenting Conservative Perspectives. The Study, titled “Perceived Political Bias in AI Models,” surveyed Users who consistently reported that AI Outputs aligned more with Progressive Ideologies, leading to Perceptions of Unfairness (Stanford News).
Similarly, a Brookings Institution Report, “The Politics of AI: ChatGPT and Political Bias,” examined how LLMs propagate Ideological Slants. Authors noted that ChatGPT, trained on vast Internet Data skewed toward Urban, English-speaking, and left-leaning Sources, often generates Responses that mirror Democratic-leaning Viewpoints on Topics like Immigration and Gun Control. This isn’t accidental; the Report cites internal OpenAI Documents revealing Efforts to “align” Models with Societal Values, which inadvertently introduces Bias (Brookings Institution).
Academic Research further substantiates this. A 2022 Paper in Big Data & Society, “Algorithmic Political Bias in Artificial Intelligence Systems,” argues that Political Discrimination in AI mirrors Racial and Gender Biases, arising from imbalanced Datasets where Conservative Content is underrepresented. For example, Training Data from Platforms like Reddit or Wikipedia often amplifies Liberal Voices, causing AI to downplay or criticize right-wing Arguments (PMC). An MIT Study from 2024 on Language Reward Models — used to fine-tune AI Outputs — found that even “Neutral” Systems exhibited Bias, preferring Responses aligned with left-of-center Politics on 60% of tested Prompts (MIT News).
These Biases aren’t abstract; they influence real-world Interactions. A University of Washington Experiment in 2025 demonstrated how biased Chatbots could sway Users’ Political Views after just a few Exchanges, with Participants shifting toward the AI’s implied Ideology — Democrats rightward, Republicans leftward — highlighting AI’s persuasive Power (UW News).
From Bias to Censorship: Tagging Content as “Inappropriate”
Political Bias in AI doesn’t stop at skewed Responses; it extends to Moderation Tools that label User-generated Content as “Inappropriate,” without Transparency. Social Media Platforms and AI-driven Filters increasingly rely on LLMs to detect “Hate Speech“, “Misinformation“, or “Harmful” Content, but biased Algorithms disproportionately target certain Viewpoints. A 2023 Freedom House Report — “The Repressive Power of Artificial Intelligence” — details how AI amplifies Digital Repression globally. In Authoritarian Regimes, AI censors Dissent efficiently, but even in Democracies, Overzealous Algorithms suppress valid Discussions and promote Socialism. For instance, Twitter (now 𝕏) and Facebook’s AI Moderators have flagged Conservative Posts on Topics like Election Integrity as “Misinformation” much more frequently than Liberal ones, according to internal Audits cited in the Report (Freedom House).
This Tagging Mechanism threatens open Dialogue and the very Fabric of Society. An Article in PMC on “AI-Driven Disinformation” warns that poorly tuned Algorithms over-censor, violating Free Speech by suppressing Debates on sensitive Issues like COVID-19 Totalitarian Policies or The Climate Fraud. Users attempting to discuss these Topics may find their Content shadow-banned or labeled “Inappropriate“, limiting Visibility without Appeal (PMC). In the EU — the Digital Services Act mandates AI Scanning for “Illegal” Content — but a 2024 Analysis by America Renewing argues this enables Mass Surveillance and Bias, with Algorithms trained on State-influenced Data flagging right-wing Speech as “Hate” more readily (America Renewing).
A PDF from the OSCE’s “Freedom of the Media and Artificial Intelligence” (2021) echoes this, noting that AI Content Filters in Media Outlets often reflect Developers’ Biases, leading to self-censorship. Journalists report that AI Tools flag Stories critical of Progressive Policies as “Potentially Harmful,” discouraging Coverage (OSCE).
Threatening Legal Principles of Free Speech
These Practices directly challenge Free Speech protections.
In the U.S., the First Amendment safeguards even unpopular Speech, but AI Moderation by private Companies skirts this by acting as Gatekeepers. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) explores this in “Artificial Intelligence, Free Speech, and the First Amendment” — arguing that while AI lacks Rights, its Outputs and Moderation Decisions impact Human Expression. Users can’t freely discuss Topics without AI Intervention, raising Questions about Coerced Conformity (FIRE).
The Cato Institute’s Briefing — “Artificial Intelligence Regulation Threatens Free Expression” — warns that Government-mandated AI Alignments (e.g., via proposed U.S. or EU Laws) could institutionalize Bias, mandating Censorship of “Disinformation” in Ways that favor elite Narratives. This echoes historical Red Lines on Speech, but scaled by AI’s Speed and Reach (Cato).
A 2024 Paper in Radical Librarianship — “Censorship, Artificial Intelligence, and AI Literacy” — positions AI Censorship as a Library and Information Science Crisis, intersecting with Free Access Tenets. It cites Cases where AI Library Chatbots refuse Queries on controversial Books, tagging them “Inappropriate” due to Bias (Radical Librarianship).
OpenAI itself acknowledges the Issue in “Defining and Evaluating Political Bias in LLMs” — committing to real-world Testing but admitting current Models like ChatGPT show moderate left-leaning Tendencies (OpenAI).
Conclusion: Toward Unbiased AI and Protected Speech
AI’s Political Biases, coupled with automated Censorship, create a chilling Effect on Free Speech, forcing Users into Echo Chambers or Silence. While Developers like OpenAI and Google “pledge Bias Mitigation” through diverse Training Data and Audits, Progress is moving at such a pace it makes Snails look like Race Horses. Legal Challenges, such as Lawsuits against Platforms for discriminatory Moderation, may force Accountability. But try that for 𝕏, and you will soon find out that there is only one Judge in all of the US appointed to oversee such cases against 𝕏. A Judge who has a significant Stock Portfolio in one of Elon Musk’s other companies, Tesla. Policymakers must prioritize Transparency — requiring explainable AI Decisions — and uphold Free Speech by limiting Overreach in Regulation.
As AI integrates deeper into daily Life, addressing these Biases isn’t just Technical; it’s a Defense of Free, Democratic Nations. Users deserve Tools that facilitate Open Discussion, not ones that preemptively tag Ideas as Threats and indoctrinates Users into Socialists. Children and Young People are fast becoming the biggest Users of AI. As it stands now, they are literally being brainwashed with Marxist Ideology. It’s actually so bad now, that if you ask the biggest AI Systems today for a critique of all the Marxist Crimes Against Humanity, you will at best get a whitewashed version. But you are just as likely to be hit with “Service Error: Inappropriate Content“. And that is saying something, since all the branches on the Marxist Family Tree: Fascism, Nazism, Communism and a plethora of Socialisms in total over little more than a Century have murdered more than a Billion Human Beings. And when AI is this biased, I fear that the Murders have not stopped. Because talking about these Atrocities — and sharing the Facts surrounding them — is the best Antidote against these taking place again.

For more on mitigating AI Bias, Resources from MIT and Brookings may offer practical Guidance. In any case, Vigilance from Users, Researchers, and Lawmakers is essential to prevent AI from becoming a Tool of Subtle and perhaps not even very Subtle Authoritarianism — and in the End — Totalitarianism.
